The interpretation of this kanji is interesting and lovely. Kara means empty (without weapon) while Te means hand. Do means that the study of Shotokai is being done as a "way of life" a "life-path." Shoto refers to a sword blade but also refers to an ancient translation, "the sound of wind as it passes through the pine trees," which is the preferred meaning. Kai is the Japanese equivalent of Ryu or "style, school." Thus: The Empty Handed Way of the Wind in the Pines Style.
