The multistoried structure of the Kodokan was built in 1984 and dedicated to Jigoro Kano, the founder of Modern Judo as a sport in Japan.  Judo & Jujutsu were always military (martial) arts and were the primary defense systems learned by the Samurai  / Ronin Warrior Classes throughout Feudal Japan of the Shogun.
