Japanese Terms
Translating Okinawan or Japanese to English, and vice versa, has always been somewhat difficult. These languages do not use our alphabet and the method of pronunciation is different, not to mention that some words have no direct translation. Americans have tried to phonetically spell Okinawan/Japanese words; for this reason, you may see the same words spelled differently from reference to reference.
When pronouncing words, each syllable is stressed equally when saying multi-syllable words (i.e., ka-ra-te, not kar-ate). Think of speaking in a monotone voice, so that all syllables of a word are pronounced with equal emphasis.
There is no "R" sound in Okinawan or Japanese; if you see this letter in a word, pronounce it closer to an "L", or like a rolled "R".
A word does not change in the plural as it does in American. For example, "kata" may mean one kata or five kata. It is incorrect to say, "katas".
