Using a 9.99 point system, each Official must determine the quality of empty handed kata based upon a wide variety of kata skill areas which the performer must demonstrate during the competition. These include but are not limited to: enthusiasm, correct technique, proper stance, width of stance, direction of sight and turning of the head to see opponents to the other angles, Kime (focus of technique), Chikuchi (power of important blocking or striking techniques), fighting spirit, aesthetic beauty, opening and closing of the kata, even the announcement of the kata to be performed are taken into consideration. In this way, Isshinryu Judges must also be able to give scores to other than Isshinryu practitioners such as Shotokan, Gojuryu, etc. styles of karate.
