At the Isshinryu Karate Do, Stamford Dojo, we believe that students must practice jiu kumite (free style sparring) under a number of different conditions and with varying degrees of realism. Some of our kumite practice is done in bare feet and with no body protection. In these instances, students are expected to learn how to control their punches, strikes and kicks so as not to injure their sparring partner. This control is known as Kime. When students wear protective gear and shoes, they learn how to adapt their training to the reality of the streets. Full contact and full power are expected when using protective gear.
