On the first night of the camp, there was a many hour warmup followed by Kotekitei conditioning. This would be useful later in breaking. Sensei Michael Reeves, World Breaking Champion instructed students in the finer points of Tamishiwara. Sensei Gagnon participated in what eventually turned out to be a competition regarding the number of boards which someone could break with various body parts. On a rug surface, Sensei Gagnon broke eight boards on a wobbly stand without cinder blocks to hold the stack of boards. There were no spacers. Dr. Gagnon won the impromptu contest. Later Sensei Reeves remarked that "Gagnon has arms like an Oak Tree." This was to follow Gagnon throughout the weekend.
