A student of Harada Sensei, Miyoshi Shiwara moved to the U.S.A. in 1959 to begin a Shotokai Dojo in the Boston Area.  His first Dojo did not attract many students and he moved to Sommerville, MA  in June of 1962.  It was here that John Gagnon, then a student at MIT met and studied Karate Do Shotokai under Sensei Shiwara and was promoted to the rank of Shodan in 1965 before leaving MIT and returning to CT.
